Muslim Heroes Saved Jewish Lives During Holocaust

Today, January 27, 2013, is the International Holocaust Memorial Day. On this day, 68 years ago, the Allied Forces liberated the Auschwitz Death Camp. Although Israel commemorates her Holocaust Memorial Day on a date memorializing the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the United Nations has chosen for the International Holocaust Memorial Day to fall on Auschwitz Liberation Day.

According to Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a former Chief Rabbi of Israel “In my opinion, the date set by the UN as the International Holocaust Memorial Day should be used to commemorate the righteous of other nations, who worked to save Jews in spite of the terrible dangers involved. There is no more appropriate a day than this to deliberate upon the personalities of those stars which shone brightly in the darkest night, people such as Chiune Sugihara, the Japanese consul in Lithuania; Roul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat in Hungary; Oscar Schindler, the German industrialist in Poland, and many others whose names are not known well enough.” Some of those names are of Muslims who selflessly risked their lives to save Jews and International Holocaust Memorial Day is a significant day to honor those people. Quem me enviou esta foi meu amigo Antônio Vandir. Achei interessante, pois um dos fundamentos da perspectiva européia sempre foi a chamada “Cristandade”. Ora, o cenário atual é de redução no número de católicos e protestantes no Velho Mundo e de aumento de muçulmanos, em especial no continente europeu. Será, no mínimo, interessante ver a proliferação de mesquistas nas cidades européias diante de igrejas cada vez mais vazias (fui a algumas igrejas recentemente, participando inclusive de uma missa em Bruxelas, e o cenário era mesmo esse…).

Estariam a “Cristandade” e os valores tradicionais europeus ameaçados pelo Islã? Como isso afetará as relações (sociais, culturais, política e econômicas) na Europa? Queda vertical de católicos e protestantes na Europa

1. Estudo de uma equipe de sociólogos do EVS mostra que, em 1999, havia 62,1% de católicos e 25,8% de protestantes no continente. Em 2008, data do último relatório, registrou-se queda vertical nas proporções, para 36,7% e 14,5%, respectivamente. Entre os franceses, eram 70% os que se diziam católicos em 1981, e não mais que 43% em 2008. No Reino Unido, os protestantes passaram de 56,6% para 38,7% e os católicos, de 13,6% para 10,8%. Na Alemanha, os protestantes caíram de 34,5% para 27%, e o número de católicos permaneceu praticamente inalterado, em torno de 22%. Continuar lendo →
