Bavarian Blues – Munich Loses Bid to Host Winter Olympics

The Bavarian capital city of Munich has lost its multimillion-euro bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics. The International Olympic Committee has instead awarded the honor to Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Munich on Wednesday lost its bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) voting in favor of the South Korean resort of Pyeongchang instead. Sixty-three committee members voted for Pyeongchang, compared to 25 for Munich and just seven for French candidate Annecy.

The initiative to land the games in Munich and the Alpine resorts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Königssee had been led by German President Christian Wulff and gold medal figure skater Katharina Witt.

“This is a defeat for Germany, in this contest there is only one gold medal,” said IOC Vice President and German Olympic Association (DOSB) President Thomas Bach. “A decision was made to continue to go into new markets and regions.”

President Wulff, who had made the case for Munich earlier on Wednesday, said, “We congratulate Pyeongchang.”

Meanwhile, Munich Mayor Christian Ude spoke openly of his disappointment, saying: “Of course I am sad that the decision didn’t fall in our favor.”
